📖 Bala Glossary

🧭 Sthana Bala — Positional Strength

5 sub-components: Uchcha (exaltation), Saptavargaja (divisional dignity), Ojhayugma (gender of sign), Kendra (angular house), Drekkana (decanate). Reflects WHERE the planet is placed.

🧲 Dig Bala — Directional Strength

Each planet has a preferred direction/house: Sun & Mars → 10th, Moon & Venus → 4th, Mercury & Jupiter → 1st, Saturn → 7th. Strength decreases with distance from that house.

⏳ Kala Bala — Temporal Strength

6 sub-components: Nathonnatha (day/night fitness), Paksha (lunar fortnight), Tribhaga (part-of-day), Abda (year), Masa (month), Vara (weekday). Reflects WHEN the person was born.

💨 Cheshta Bala — Motional Strength

For the 5 true planets (not Sun/Moon). Retrograde planets receive the highest Cheshta Bala (60). Faster direct motion = more strength than slow or stationary.

⭐ Naisargika Bala — Natural Strength

Fixed permanent order defined by Parasara: Sun (60) → Moon → Venus → Jupiter → Mercury → Mars → Saturn (8.57). Cannot change; reflects the planet's cosmic rank.

👁️ Drik Bala — Aspectual Strength

Strength received from aspects of other planets. Benefics (Jupiter, Venus, Mercury) bestow positive Drik; natural malefics reduce it. Conjunctions, trines, and oppositions are considered.

ℹ️ Methodology Note: Shadbala values are calculated per Maharshi Parasara's Brihat Parasara Hora Shastra (BPHS). Some sub-components (Tribhaga, Abda, Masa) use simplified approximations. Cheshta Bala uses real-time geocentric velocities. Required Rupas per planet follow classical BPHS thresholds.
